Christmas is the celebration of love. And while one way to our hearts is through our stomachs – another is a stroll through Vienna in all its winter glory. Led by a city host from ‘Vienna with locals’, discover the Christmas charm of Vienna, one of the most romantic cities in the world, on the exclusive PhilsPlace Xmas Tour.
Starting at PhilsPlace, the Christmas tour route follows the footpath through the George-Washington-Hof – a typical Viennese residential building that is protected as a historic monument – and past the Spinnerin am Kreuz (Spinner at the Cross). Legend has it that in this very spot by the Gothic stone pillar, a woman sat spinning for years while she waited for her husband. So as soon as our troop has gathered all its men, the tour continues with the tram number 1 towards the city center. Just a glance out of the tram (or the “Bim”, as it is known by locals) is enough for any grinch to be swept up in the magic of Christmas. Passing the Karlsplatz, Opera, Burggarten, the museums, Heldenplatz and the Parliament, the ride ends at the Burgtheater. The sweet aroma of punch and sugar roasted almonds will lead you directly to the nostalgic Christmas wonderland of the longest-standing Viennese “Christkindl” market. But Christmas can be modern, too – the route continues on in the direction of the Museum Quarter, where the Glühwein is accompanied by a hip ambience and wintry beats. After a wander through history-laden alleys and past traditional buildings, the route ends at the authentic old-style Viennese apartment of journalist Gaby, who invites you in for Jäger tea and cookies while you enjoy the view of the wintry Belvedere Palace from her windows. This view, if nothing else, is sure to melt the heart of even the biggest Christmas refuseniks.
