From ants to zebras: discover the diversity of nature. You can do this right in the heart of Vienna – at Schönbrunn Zoo. And it’s only about 25 minutes away from PhilsPlace by public transport.
The zoo was founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz I. Stephan von Lothringen, Maria Theresia’s husband. It is right next to one of Vienna’s most popular tourist attractions: Schönbrunn Palace. It’s also part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site of Schönbrunn.
Where crowned heads of state once strolled, today over 2 million people pay a visit to the zoo each year. It has been awarded the title of “Best Zoo in Europe” a total of four times. This comes as no surprise; after all, it combines historic imperial flair with a modern animal experience.
The 17 hectares provide a unique habitat for around 700 animal species. Some of the most popular inhabitants are the giant pandas with their cubs. In addition, the polar bear exhibit, where you can watch polar bears diving, is not to be missed. Whether in winter or summer, when you enter the rainforest house, the climate changes dramatically. And strolling along the canopy trail gives you the opportunity to explore the forest from lofty heights and admire the excellent view of Vienna.
Further highlights include the Tiroler Hof restaurant, the nature experience trail, live feedings, backstage, family and nighttime guided tours, panorama train and much more. Open daily from 9am, 365 days a year.
